Borusan Music Scholarship

As part of the Guest Conductor Project initiated by Borusan Holding in 2006, elite leaders of the business world, media and society conduct the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra in exchange for their donations. The donated amount, then, is granted as a music scholarship that is designed to promote the advancement of classical music in Turkey by providing a talented young artist with the opportunity to receive overseas education.

This Year's Borusan Music Scholarship Awarded to Mustafa Arda Cabaoğlu

This year, the Borusan Music Scholarship has been awarded to Mustafa Arda Cabaoğlu. He was selected as the recipient of the scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year by the evaluation committee, presided over by Sir John Tooley. After receiving his BM from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Istanbul State Conservatory, Cabaoğlu graduated from Istanbul Technical University, Advanced Studies in Music (MIAM) Musical Performance Department in 2008 with a Master of Music degree. Cabaoğlu, who plays the trumpet, has now gained a place on the DMA programme (Doctor of Musical Arts) of the University of Rochester Eastman School of Music as a student of James Thompson.

Application Requirements for the Borusan Music Scholarship

Applications for the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra scholarship, granted from the proceeds of the "Guest Conductor Project", will be accepted between the dates April 1 and April 30, 2009. Musicians under 26 years of age with a unique talent in classical music are eligible for this scholarship. The grant covers the overseas education at one of the following graduate schools, providing the applicant has already been approved for admission:

  • Royal Academy of Music, England
  • Royal College of Music, England
  • Guildhall School of Music and Drama, England
  • Royal Northern College of Music, England
  • Berlin Hochschule, Germany
  • Köln Hochschule, Germany
  • Curtis Institute, USA
  • Julliard School, USA
  • Eastman School of Music, USA
  • Indiana University School of Music, USA

Applicants are required to fill the "Scholarship Application Form" and submit it along with

  • a copy of their identity card,
  • their curriculum vitae,
  • a telephone number,
  • and documentation substantiating their admission to the graduate program of one of the schools listed above

The name of the grantee will be announced on our Web site on May 9, 2009.

About the Guest Conductor Project

The Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra inaugurated the "Guest Conductor Project" in Turkey with a special concert performed on February 9, 2006. Mr. Ahmet Kocabıyık, the Chairman of the Executive Board of Borusan Holding, participated in the concert as the inaugural Guest Conductor by virtue of his € 25,000 donation. This grant is presently used in the education of a young person with a special talent in classical music. The second "Guest Conductor" was none other than Mr. Rahmi M. Koç, Honorary Chairman of Koç Holding, Turkey's largest conglomerate.
