Can Okan

Born in Istanbul in 1986, Okan began his piano education with Meliha Doğuduyal in 1994. He twice entered the “Young Musician of the Year” competition sponsored by the Edirne Rotary Club, placing second in 1998 and winning the First Prize in 1999. He later enrolled in the Piano Department of the State Conservatory at the Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in Istanbul, where he began studying under Professor Metin Ülkü.

From 2001 to 2004, Okan continued his high school studies and also attended music theory and composition classes. Also in 2004, Okan performed for the first time the opus entitled Part 4 written by the contemporary Turkish composer Özkan Manav. At a solo piano recital he gave on February 1, 2005 at the Italian Culture Center, the young artist introduced Four Panels and Two Bands, a piece written by Mehmet Nemutlu, another contemporary Turkish composer. Shortly thereafter, on March 3, 2005, Okan made a presentation entitled Charles Ives and his Music at the Borusan Center for Culture and Arts. Following that, on April 20, 2005, Okan attended the Contemporary Art Festival organized by Aksanat.

Okan's first performance with an orchestra was on May 1, 2005 at the ODTÜ Congress and Exhibition Hall in Ankara, during which he accompanied the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, which was conducted by Gürer Aykal. On that auspicious occasion, Okan performed Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2 op. 19. He later performed the same piece on May 26, 2005 at the Saint Irene Museum in Istanbul, also accompanied by BIFO.

In 2006, during the months of April and September, Okan joined the prestigious Ayvalık International Music Academy, founded and managed by Professor Filiz Ali, where he accompanied several artists. That same year, he attended the 12-day “Music-Alp” summer workshop in Courchevel, France and worked with French pianist Gery Moutier, a professor at the Lyon Conservatory.

Okan began 2007 with a flourish as he was among three pianists chosen participate in a special class at İş Sanat from January 25-27 to work with the virtuoso Dmitri Alexeev, a distinguished professor of the Royal College of Music. At a special recital given on March 26 at the Italian Culture Center, Okan presented a program that included the works of Schubert, Brahms and Wagner. He returned to the Ayvalık International Music Academy for a mastership class with Idil Biret from July 1-9 and later worked with Arnulf von Arnim while attending a summer school session in August at the Salzburg Mozarteum University, which he attended thanks to a scholarship awarded by the Austrian High School Foundation.

Okan began his orchestra conduction education in the 2005-2006 academic year at the State Conservatory at the Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in Istanbul. He continues to major in piano and work with Professor Ülkü in the Piano Department, as well as with Professor Gürer Aykal in the Orchestra Conduction Department.
