Joseph Wolfe

The young British conductor, Joseph Wolfe, appeared five times during the 2006-2007 season with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In the fall of 2006, he made his international opera conducting debut in Sweden by conducting the Malmö Opera's production of Dead Man Walking by Jake Heggie. Other highlights of that season include his debut with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in June of 2007, plus his first appearances in Scandinavia and Germany. His 2005-2006 season saw him invited to return to conduct orchestras he had previously appeared with, including the English Chamber Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as others he had worked with outside the UK.

More recently, Wolfe's work has taken him to Turkey where he has linked up with the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra (BIFO). He led the Orchestra at the opening concert of the 2007 Istanbul Summer Festival, a feat which resulted in a three-year agreement to continue to appear with BIFO. Wolfe has also made radio recordings for Bavarian Radio with the Munich Chamber Orchestra and the Bamberg Symphoniker.

Joseph Wolfe began his conducting studies at the Hochschule Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden, where he also founded and directed the Dresden Kammersinfoniker. During this period he was also the Guest Conductor of the Brandenburg Philharmonic. Upon his return to the UK, Wolfe continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he formed the Nimrod Ensemble of London. In 2000, he studied with Sergiu Celibidache's assistant Konrad von Abel, as well as with Professor Jorma Panula in Helsinki during courses with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.

Following Wolfe's debut with the Bavarian State Youth Orchestra in 2003 he was invited to return for concerts with the orchestra in 2004 at Munich's Gasteig, as well as in Nuremberg, which were broadcast by Bavarian Radio. He would later return to perform with them in the summer of 2006. In the summer of 2004, Wolfe was invited to the Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts to share a concert with Kurt Masur. There he also assisted Stefan Asbury in Benjamin Britten's opera A Midsummer Night's Dream. He was a prizewinner at the 7th Leeds Conducting Competition. Back in London, Wolfe held the Guildhall School of Music and Drama's Conducting Fellowship during 2005-2006 season, where his responsibilities included conducting the Guildhall Sinfonia, coaching chamber music and helping with conducting classes. Elsewhere, he regularly conducts the Haydn Chamber Orchestra and the Kensington Chamber Orchestra.

Joseph Wolfe is also an accomplished violinist. He was joint leader of the Academia di San Giorgio in Venice from 1999 to 2000, as well as leader of both the Wolfe Quartet and Cromwell Quartet between 1982 and 1997. He played with the English Chamber Orchestra from 2003 to 2003. Currently, in addition to his extensive travels and heavy concert schedule, Wolfe coaches chamber music and is in great demand as a teacher. He also plays the mandolin.
