The Nova Muzak Series goes on with Rob Mazurek and São Paulo Underground’s take on tropicalia and Josef van Wissem’s look on the music of the Middle Age.

Chicago-based composer, improviser and multi-media artist Rob Mazurek has drawn inspiration from a multitude of audio and visual styles and sources over the past three decades. Augmenting his cornet playing with computer programming, electronics and an assortment of keyboards, Mazurek’s broad electro-acoustic palette defies simple categorization. He recently appeared on the cover of The Wire magazine and was voted “Musician of the Year” by Italy’s top jazz magazine, Musica Jazz! He will blow your mind at the Borusan Music House with “São Paulo Underground”. This project takes tropicalia, which reached its golden age in the 70s, and adds electronica and avant-jazz onto it only to reach a truly original combination. This post-modern orchestra’s performances present power and beauty simultaneously. Before this probably mind-blowing performance, you will meet Dutch lutist and post-minimalist composer Jozef van Wissem who adapts and interprets music written for the lute after the 1600s. He has been realizing joint projects with James Blackshaw, Gary Lucas, Jim Jarmusch and Tetuzi Akiyama since the 2000s and was rewarded at the Cannes Film Festival 2013 for the music he composed for Jim Jarmusch’s latest film Only Lovers Left Alive.
