Berlin-based jazz band Cyminology is noted for combining literature, especially Persian poetry, with chamber-esque contemporary music. The subtle yet dynamic, softly-pulsating music takes its cue from the sound of the Persian language presenting poets such as Rumi, Hafis and Khayyam.

Awarded many times throughout their performance career, Cyminology continues to enrich German jazz with the musical colors taking their inspiration from different languages and cultural backgrounds. Pioneered by German-born Iranian musician Cymin Sawamatie, and founded in 2002, Cyminology’s first album Get Strong was self-released. Since 2009 they have been working with the prestigious label ECM from which they released three recordings. Their latest Phoenix (2015) features guest musician Martin Stegner of the Berlin Philharmonic on viola. It is dedicated to 20th century female poet Forough Farrokhzaad. Cymin Samawatie’s compositions combine elements from different kinds of music, including chamber jazz, open improvisation, modern composition, impressionism and minimalism. Cyminology creates a space, in which post-migrant European culture is expressed in music and poetry. It is an adventurous experience to listen and to watch the sensitive interaction within the Berlin based quartet. In this concert, Cyminology will join forces with Martin Stegner and Korhan Erel to perform Sawamatie’s compositions. Altogether they will paint a portrait of post-migration European culture with music and poetry.
