Originating from Italian futuristic artist Luigi Russolo’s pioneering work in 1913, Noise music has a broad definition ranging from early electronic music to contemporary sound art. Noise music is a multi-layered genre which forms close ties to electronic, industrial, experimental, avant-garde and improvisational music as well as performance, installation, video and sound art. Due to its progressive approach, it appears at the beginning of the history of electronic music while it is also the endpoint of contemporary music. The foundations of Noise Istanbul were laid in 1999 by the experimental musician focusing on noise music, Batur Sönmez. The artist compiled all of his works under the title “Noiseistanbul”, gradually became the representative of Turkish noise music and organised countless events featuring artists from all around the world, from Europe to the United States, from Japan to Brazil. While Sönmez crowns his 20 years of work with Noise Istanbul Festival, a historical first takes place at the Borusan Music House with this unique experience.
